What can I do with buttermilk?
Buttermilk is great for making biscuits, pancakes, fried chicken, and even chocolate cake, but I almost always have some leftover from the recipe that I need to figure out how to use. One solution is just to make more of one of the above, but I knew there had to be something else.
Enter this pantry-friendly buttermilk salad dressing recipe that’s easy to whip up and full of flavor. Pictured here I use it to dress a salad of romaine lettuce, grape tomatoes, cucumber, and leftover fried chicken, but it’s also great as a dip for veggies or chips.
How do you make buttermilk dressing from scratch?
It’s pretty simple. To make buttermilk dressing, just mix buttermilk with some mayonnaise and season it to your liking. I keep it fairly simple in this recipe with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. I also threw in some dried parsley to try it out, but it’s completely optional. You could also use whatever fresh or dried herbs you might have on hand. And want to make buttermilk dressing without mayonnaise? Try using sour cream or yogurt instead.
Is buttermilk dressing the same as ranch dressing?
Ranch is essentially a specific type of buttermilk dressing. It usually has mayo along with a dairy product, like sour cream or yogurt. And some common flavorings you might find include some combination of herbs (like parsley, chives, or dill), a dash of various liquid flavor boosters (lemon juice, vinegar, hot sauce, or Worcestershire sauce), or your favorite spices (paprika or cayenne).
